Baltimore Is Getting Greener by the Day

In an effort to create a more eco-conscious city and to meet federal regulations, Baltimore is now looking at imposing a fee for water run-off for its city-dwellers. Pollution of urban watersheds has long been a problem in the country that went virtually unnoticed until the 1950s. Even then changes were minimal at best. While imposing the fee is only in the contemplative stages of legislation, Baltimore is looking for a way to keep their green efforts self-sustaining.

Pollution like nitrogen and phosphorus create large dead zones in the nearby bay every year, and this is due to the waste that gets dumped into storm drains each year in alleys, streets, and even directly from some homes and businesses. By getting this fee imposed, the city council will be able to get the money needed for repairing and renovating storm drains to prevent such harmful pollutants from reaching the main watersheds.

Maryland as a whole is on a similar path to help get their green indexes up over the coming years. Siemens analysis shows the largest metropolitan area near Baltimore, Washington D.C., as one of the up and coming greenest cities in the U.S. By following the example set in our nation’s capital, perhaps Maryland as a whole can reduce the amount of pollutants reaching the Chesapeake Bay each year. These pollutants cut down on biodiversity, which essentially hurts the American economy. The economy being one of the biggest motivators in the current political world, makes for an easy leveraging source for this new transition.

I’m telling you, Angie. I have a right mind to get a second opinion. If those doctors expect me to stay cooped up in this house for two more months, they got another thing coming. said Gina. Angie laughed. Oh, Gina. You know you have a high risk pregnancy. I’m a little jealous actually, I could do with a little break myself. She snorted. If I could Hank to do all my errands and a little housework I’d be set.

Gina smiled. Maybe. But, I swear I am about to go crazy with boredom in this house. I’ve seen Steel Magnolias about six times already, this week. Angie laughed. It ain’t funny, Angie. You try carrying this weight around all day. Angie laughed again. You forget, Gina, I had twins.

Gina narrowed her eyes. Bite me. Angie smiled. What about the computer?

What about it?

A Radio Host Shares a Passion Dating Back to Childhood

As a kid, I spent hours playing bingo with my sisters. Testing Continues at Maryland’s Inner Harbor

Maryland has always been deemed a clean and beautiful state. It has been seen by tourists as a great state to visit and spend time in. The Inner Harbor, however, has been going through a lot of testing and treatments in recent months leaving many citizens wondering what exactly is happening.

According to recent news reports, the Inner Harbor has been undergoing major water treatments and testing because of pollution that was dumped in the water decades ago. Even though the water was contaminated a long time ago, the effects are still continuing to create dreadful water corruption that could put people in danger if it isn’t treated properly.

Scientists are now taking samples of the water and mud to see just how bad the erosion and deterioration has gotten. This is something that is done more than 3 times a day and is a constant job for the scientists and environmentalists in Maryland. This Harbor has always been the pride of Maryland and has made it one of the top scenic states to visit. Many people that visit only see the beauty, but they have no suspicion of the pollution that is in the Inner Harbor and how it is killing the fish and any kind of plant life there. It looks beautiful from the outside but deep down in the water and dirt, it is dangerous and full of disease and bacteria.

Officials have placed warning signs around the Inner Harbor warning visitors not to swim in the water. Unfortunately, these warnings cannot keep people from touching the water and getting close enough to be affected by the bacteria. This will be an ongoing battle by environmentalist and they will not give up until the pollution is cleaned up and the Inner Harbor is back to its natural state. Hopefully with continued efforts to treat the damage, it won’t be long until Maryland’s water will be cleared as clean and refreshing and ready to enjoy.

Heat Plagues Baltimore

With the heat climbing day by day, Baltimore residents are feeling the effects of the heat outside and inside as well. The recent heat wave has residents struggling with temperatures up to 100 degrees. To add to their distress, some residents found themselves without power this week as well. This made for a difficult situation as many were left without air-conditioning or fans and had no where to go.

Believe it or not the heat is actually to blame for knocking the power out. The extreme heat has caused the system to shut down. It left thousands of people, home and businesses without power for several miles. Almost 13,000 people went without power and some are still without now. With the heat index rising over 100 degrees this heat can be deadly.

High temperatures pose a serious threat to small children and the elderly. It is important to keep check on people within this population during temperatures such as these. In order to remain safe in this heat there are several measures that can be taken. Always drink plenty of fluids such as water and sports drinks. Avoid carbonated drinks as much as possible. Always sit in the shade and not directly in the sun. Close shades on windows to block direct sunlight into the home. Run fans or air conditioning whenever possible. Dress in think cotton clothing and avoid layers. If you feel faint or begin to feel nauseated you should seek medical attention.

Heat stroke is common in the elderly and can be avoided by ensuring that your loved ones drink plenty of fluids and stay cool. Outdoor activities such as lawn care and exercise should be avoided in extreme temperatures and avoided by the elderly during the summer months. Baltimore hopes to avoid any further power outages.

Pollution in Baltimore

Growing concern about pollution in the Sparrows and Coke Point area in recent days has stirred up both action and controversy. This once very active industrial area is now the home of few businesses and host of empty buildings. The main concern is in the waterway which is believed to be the dump spot to trash and waste from the industries. It is believed that this pollution may be causing some health concerns for those who live close and who use the water within this waterway.

Affected by the pollution is the food chain. Sediment from pollution have been found in oysters and most decidedly has affected the fish and land and air animals. A study conducted by the Maryland Port Administration confirms that there is, in fact, pollution and it may have a lasting effect on the environment. The damage is found to be so hazardous that the Maryland Port Administration has indicated that it is not safe to swim in the area. It is also not safe to crab or fish. Many people are upset at this and have demanded a, effort for clean up to be planned immediately.

A meeting was held on Wednesday at the North Point Volunteer Fire Department where attendees discussed possible clean up efforts to restore the environment at the waterway. It is unclear whose plate the cost of the clean up will fall upon. The Maryland Port Administration has indicated that taxpayers should not be expected to pay for the clean-up efforts when the industries are clearly to blame. What is clear, is that getting the industries to step up to the plate with funding for the clean-up efforts will take time. In the meantime the environment continues to suffer from the effects of this devastating pollution.
